BECOMING HUMAN

"I know now what no angel knows."
Wings of Desire

The tools of the theatre are ancient and basic – a group of humans in a room, communicating with words, breath, sweat, glances, laughter, tears, and sighs. Night after night we perform live, and we try to explore what it means to be human.

The productions of our 2006-07 season journey through many flavors of live theatre. From the seriously clownish Ridiculusmus (The Importance of Being Earnest) to the intensely focused cast of Britannicus, from master storyteller Mike Daisey (Invincible Summer) to the all-stars of the A.R.T. resident company , the season features artists who strive for direct, immediate, passionate communication with their audience.

This is also a season of transformations in which the paintings of Robert Rauschenberg (bobrauschenbergamerica), the music of The Dresden Dolls (The Onion Cellar) and a classic novel by Dickens (Oliver Twist) are all born anew as live performances on the two stages of the A.R.T. Then there's the greatest transformation of all – that of the angel Damiel, hero of Wings of Desire, who trades his wings and his immortality for the experience of a touch, a sense of smell, a heartbeat. Please join us for these eight journeys across worlds and ages, and celebrate with us the angel who becomes human.

bobrauschenbergamerica

"Brashly, unapologetically entertaining."
-
The New York Times

text by Charles L. Mee
directed by Anne Bogart
in association with the SITI Company

bobrauschenbergamerica is a fantastical road trip through the American landscape, written as Robert Rauschenberg, one of America's greatest living artists, might conceive it. Traveling easily through time, the play is a glorious collage of images and sensations - Rauschenberg's childhood home, a human martini, a pizza delivery boy, the world's worst collection of chicken jokes… More than a biographical portrait, bobrauschenbergamerica is a tribute to one artist's singular vision. Anne Bogart and the SITI Company return to the A.R.T. for the first time since their award-winning production of La Dispute to stage this delightful, kaleidoscopic play by Charles L. Mee (author of Full Circle and Snow in June.)

September 9 - October 7, 2006 - Loeb Stage

WINGS OF DESIRE

World Premiere

stage adaptation by Gideon Lester and Dirkje Houtman

after the film Wings of Desire (Himmel uber Berlin), directed by Wim Wenders, with screenplay by Wim Wenders, Peter Handke, and Richard Reitinger

directed by Ola Mafaalani

Damiel, a guardian angel, is weary of his eternal existence observing and cataloging the ways of mankind. When he falls in love with a lonely trapeze artist, he resolves to sacrifice his wings and his immortality to join her on earth - and to taste human life. Based on Wim Wenders' unforgettable film, Wings of Desire is about the borders, visible and invisible, that divide us - borders between East and West, between angels and people, between two human beings. For this stunning new stage adaptation the A.R.T. is partnering with Toneelgroep Amsterdam, the Netherlands' premiere theatre company. With a half-Dutch, half-American cast, Wings of Desire is staged by Ola Mafaalani, one of Europe's most celebrated young directors, whose productions are contemporary, passionate, physical, and intensely alive.

composed by Amanda Palmer
conceived by Amanda Palmer and Marcus Stern
text by Jonathan Marc Sherman
directed by Marcus Stern

Inside the small confines of the mysterious club The Onion Cellar, the internationally renowned rock duo The Dresden Dolls provides nightly entertainment while a series of stories unfold around them. As singer, songwriter, and keyboardist Amanda Palmer and drummer Brian Viglione play their songs, the Onion Cellar becomes a space where rock and roll meets cabaret with humor and humanity.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

American Premiere (adaptation)

"Exceptionally funny ... makes you hear every line afresh!"
- The Guardian
(London)

by Oscar Wilde
performed by Ridiculusmus
directed by Jude Kelly

You've never seen an Earnest like this! Oscar Wilde's classic comedy of identity fraud receives a riotous new treatment from Ridiculusmus, the comedy duo, who play all the parts - from Earnest to Lady Bracknell - themselves, just the two of them. This virtuosic interpretation of Wilde's irrepressible caper has been received with wild acclaim around the world, and we're delighted to welcome it to the States for the first time.

December 21, 2006 - January 14, 2007 - Loeb Stage

BRITANNICUS

by Jean Racine
directed by Robert Woodruff

"Intelligent, complex, and impassioned!" –Boston Globe

The Emperor Nero is running wild, leaving a mass of political and personal scandals in his wake. When he attempts to seduce the girlfriend of his half-brother Britannicus, Nero's mother, the mighty Agrippina, steps in to prevent him, and chaos ensues. Artistic Director Robert Woodruff will direct Racine's magnificent play - part political thriller, part gripping family drama, set in a palace at the center of the empire where private and public worlds collide. Operatic in its passions and composed in some of the most beautiful poetry ever written for the stage, Britannicus is a tautly-plotted masterpiece.

OLIVER TWIST

American Premiere (adaptation)

"A great novel has been transformed into truly stunning theatre."
- The Daily Telegraph
(London)

based on the novel by Charles Dickens
adapted and directed by Neil Bartlett

Inspired by the vivid world of Victorian music-hall, Neil Bartlett's staging of Oliver Twist uses the original language of Dickens' novel to dramatize one of the most deeply felt stories about childhood ever written. A cast of unforgettable characters brings the underworld of nineteenth-century London back to thrilling life - a city teeming with images of danger and fear - all seen through the eyes of an astonished child. By turns comic and tragic, musical and dramatic, Neil's adaptation of Oliver Twist was a runaway success in London. We're thrilled to welcome him back to the A.R.T., together with designer Rae Smith, to recreate this sensational production for our audience.

INVINCIBLE SUMMER

created and performed by Mike Daisey

"Comic delivery so sharp it draws blood."
- San Jose Mercury News

In Invincible Summer, monologuist Mike Daisey tells his story of the last glorious summer before everything changed. Starting with the bizarre history of New York's epic subway system, Daisey crafts a startling vision of his Brooklyn neighborhood before and after one terrible day, setting an intensely personal story of a family in crisis against the backdrop of massive social upheaval. Invincible Summer is a tale of loss and democracy for our time brought to life by one of the theatre’s fiercest and funniest storytellers.

April 4-29 - Zero Arrow Theatre

The previously scheduled Elections & Erections: A Memoir of Fear and Fun has been postponed.

NO MAN'S LAND

by Harold Pinter
directed by David Wheeler

Spooner and Hirst are two aging writers, locked in the no man's land of late middle age. They meet on Hampstead Heath and return to Hirst's home for a late-night session of witty banter, sinister power games, and the worship of alcohol. Harold Pinter's elegant, haunting play is part mystery drama, part homage to the ghosts of the past and the fiction of memory. David Wheeler returns to the A.R.T. to direct this tragicomic gem from Britain's Nobel Prize-winning playwright.
