Dozens of international organizations exist to advocate for refugees and asylum seekers, and there are hundreds of organizations working at national and local levels. Below is a select list, courtesy of the Carr Foundation.

American Immigration Lawyers Association
The national bar association of more than 8,000 lawyers and law professors who practice and teach immigration law.

Amnesty International
The world's largest human rights organization, it seeks the release of prisoners of conscience, works for the fair and prompt trials for all political prisoners and opposes the death penalty.

Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma
A multi-disciplinary program that has pioneered the health and mental health care of traumatized refugees and civilians in areas of conflict/post-conflict and natural disasters.

Human Rights Watch
Investigates and exposes human rights violations and holds abusers accountable. It challenges governments to end abusive practices and respect international human rights law.

International Committee of the Red Cross
Directs and coordinates international relief activities and works to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and internal violence and to provide them with assistance.

International Organization for Migration
Works with the international community to assist humane and orderly migration.

International Rescue Committee
Provides relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.

Lawyers Committee for Human Rights
Lobbies the US government to provide better protection for refugees and asylum seekers.

Lutheran Immigrant and Refugee Services
A nation-wide resettlement agency that specializes in unaccompanied children.

National Immigration Forum
Advocates and builds public support for public policies that welcome immigrants and refugees and that are fair and supportive to newcomers in the United States.

National Immigration Project
A network of immigration lawyers, law students, jailhouse lawyers, and legal workers who work to end unlawful immigration practices, to recognize the contributions of immigrants in this country, to promote fair immigration practices, and to expand the civil and human rights of all immigrants, regardless of their status in the United States.

Physicians for Human Rights
Among its programs, PHR operates the Asylum Network, a group of over 300 professionals that provides pro bono medical and psychological evaluations of asylum seekers.

Refugees International
Serves refugees, displaced persons, and other dispossessed people around the world through on-site field assessment missions.

UNHCR
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has a mandate to lead and co-ordinate international action for the worldwide protection of refugees and the resolution of refugee problems. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees.

UNRWA
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East provides services to 3.8 million registered Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

US Committee for Refugees
A nonprofit humanitarian organization that works for the protection and assistance of uprooted people around the world.

US Immigration and Naturalization Service
Part of the Department of Justice, INS is the US agency that handles immigration and asylum applications. Slated to become part of the Department of Homeland Security.

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
Resettles refugees, advocates on behalf of immigrants and people on the move, and provides pastoral care to newcomers from all over the world.

Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children
Works to ensure that refugee and displaced women, children and adolescents are given protection, encouraged to participate, and have access to education, health services and livelihood opportunities. Part of the International Rescue Committee.


Massachusetts

The Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights
Provides comprehensive health care for refugees and survivors of torture and related trauma, coordinated with legal aid and social services.

Commonwealth of Massachusetts Office for Refugees and Immigrants
Assists refugees in adjusting to life in Massachusetts. Supports programs for refugees and immigrants, acts as their public advocate, coordinates state and federal services on refugees' behalf, and works to make mainstream programs linguistically and culturally accessible to refugees and immigrants.

Greater Boston Legal Services
Their immigration unit represents asylum-seekers, undocumented battered women and undocumented unaccompanied minors to help them obtain legal status from the INS.

International Institute of Boston
Fosters the success of immigrants and refugees in the United States by providing a range of comprehensive professional and cultural services.

Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition
Promotes the rights, opportunities and well-being of immigrant and refugee communities by focusing on policy advocacy, public education, capacity building and leadership development in newcomer communities.

Political Asylum/Immigration Representation Project
The PAIR Project is a pro bono immigration organization that represents low-income asylum-seekers in the United States who have fled from persecution in countries around the world.
