A.R.T.
Founding Director Robert Brustein,
Professor Emeritus of English at Harvard and the theatre
critic of The New Republic, is the author of twelve
books on theatre and society. He has also written the plays
Demons and Nobody
Dies on Friday, and has adapted works by Chekhov,
Ibsen, Pirandello and Singer. Autographed copies of the
following titles can be ordered
directly from the theatre:
Cultural
Calisthenics: Writings on Race, Politics, and Theatre,
Ivan R. Dee, $26.
Published in 1998, Cultural Calisthenics shows Mr. Brustein
at his best: an outstanding critic of drama and a prescient
observer of our times. He writes of his thoughts on segregated
casting, political correctness, the National Endowment of
the Arts, and the theatre at work over the past five years.
Read it and feast.
Reimagining
American Theatre, Hill and Wang, $10.
This ground-breaking work celebrates the American theatre,
its actors, playwrights and directors through a series of
witty and intelligent essays. Brustein also includes powerful
examinations of the uneasy balance between politics and
the art community in America, and concludes this book with
the difficulties and challenges facing modern theatre.
Who
Needs Theatre, Atlantic Monthly Press, $10.
A collection of critical essays touching on all aspects
of modern and classical theatre, from the Contemporary American
Playwright to the British Conquest, thi is an essential
guide to performers, productions, and theatrical personalities.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer calls it "optimistic, idealistic
and generous ... Brustein writes as clearly and vividly
about current theater as anybody around."
Order
any or all of the above books direct from the A.R.T. and
upon request your copy (or copies) will be personally autographed
by the author.
