ALEXANDER POPOV

Alexander PopovAlexander Popov received his M.F.A. in theatre history and criticism from the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS). In his freshman year at GITIS, he started his association with Oleg Tabakov and became a dramaturg of the Tabakov Studio in Moscow. After a two-year internship at the MXAT under Anatoly Smeliansky, he returned to the Tabakov Studio Theatre as the Executive and Literary Director. He continued his management training as an intern at the Royal National Theatre in London in 1989 and at the A.R.T. in 1991. In 1990-91 Mr. Popov co-produced The Acting Company/Tabakov Theatre touring exchange, with three productions touring thirteen cities in the United States and three cities in Russia and Lithuania. He served as a Russian coordinator for the Institute of International Education Russian Theatre Management Internship program in 1991-92 and as a Project Director of the United States Information Agency/Soros Foundation Arts in Russia project in 1993-94. In 1992 he facilitated the Russian-American Theatre Relations Conference in Boston, which was co-sponsored by the A.R.T. and the Rampa Center. Mr. Popov taught drama history at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) School of Drama from 1993 to 1997, where he was also Program Manager for the CMU/MXAT Graduate Acting Program. His translation credits include Ostrovsky's Diary of a Scoundrel, which was produced by Oleg Tabakov at the American Studio of the MXAT in 1996.
