English dramatist, columnist, reporter and translator. Began his writing career as a reporter and columnist for the Manchester Guardian and The Observer. During this time published several collections of essays from his columns and also wrote several novels including The Tin Men, The Russian Interpreter, and A Very Private Life. One of Frayn's novels, A Landing on the Sun, was presented on the BBC in 1994, and another, Headlong, was a contender for the Booker Prize. His plays include The Two of Us, Alphabetical Order (Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy of the Year), Clouds, Donkey's Years, Make or Break (Evening Standard Award), Noises Off (Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy of the Year), Copenhagen (Evening Standard Award for Best Play). He translated several plays by Chekhov including The Cherry Orchard, Three Sisters, and Uncle Vanya and four of his one-acts: The Evils of Tobacco, Swan Song, The Bear and The Proposal. His first film, Clockwise, featured John Cleese, and his second film, First and Last, won an international Emmy Award. The film adaptation of Noises Off was produced by Disney and Alphabetical Order, Donkey's Years, Make and Break, and Benefactors have all been filmed for UK television.
