Director Ola Mafaalani (Wings of Desire) was born in Syria, grew up in Germany and studied in the Netherlands. She began her career in the smaller production houses such as FACT and the Nes theatres. In 2000, she was awarded the Erik Vos Prize for talented up-and-coming directors. Her production of Macbeth at the Koninklijke Vlaamse Schouwburg was chosen for the 2001 Theatre Festival. She has been a permanent guest director at Toneelgroep Amsterdam since 2001, her productions include The Merchant of Venice and Romeo and Juliet, and recently she directed A Clockwork Orange with d’Electrique, which is scheduled again for the 2006-07 season.
